I have a few questions concerning my 3.5 year old male pap that I hope you can provide some suggestions/assistance:

Gizmo has become a bit aggressive as he has gotten older. He lives with my 12 year old male cat and definitely shows his dominance (humping, growling and chasing at times). He was not like this when he was younger, and nothing in or outside the household has changed for him to become this way. He even growls at me and members of my family when we try to touch him or pick him up (either to physically move him, check him for something, or just giving kisses). He is normally very sweet and loving and this does not happen all the time, but when it does, it concerns me. He has never been abused or mistreated in any way.

He will also stand with his head down a lot of times (almost trance-like and looks like a vulture). He checks out fine at all of his physicals, and unless there is something going on internally, I cannot figure out why he does this.

Another issue is his food. I have tried at least 7 or 8 different types of dry food (holistic/natural brands as well). He will eat any new food by itself for a day or two, then stops and will not eat anymore without including moist food or people-healthy food like real chicken, eggs, carrots, etc..). He is extremely picky and I would really like to get him on kibble only (especially for his teeth). I know people say if they’re hungry, they’ll eat – but he will not eat.

Last is his socialization. While I did not take him to puppy kindergarten, he was still very friendly with any size dog when taken for a walk or even in a store. Again, he has become worse as he has gotten older. He shies away from just about every dog and wants to run home whenever he encounters them while walking. Unless there is absolutely no one around outside, he will pull the entire time, and anything out of the ordinary will set him off. I took him to an all-papillon training class (where he failed miserably) and continued with weekly papillon group outings. He never even looked at any of the dogs, ran to the fence to go home, and was cowering the entire time. I really thought at least being around his own kind would help pull him out of his shell. I think growing up with my cat has caused an identity issue. That being said, do you think it might be helpful getting him another dog companion to help him remember he is a dog, or do you think the dominance factor with the cat is already bad enough for him to try and accept another animal in the household?

I would really appreciate any thoughts you may have. My vet has not been of much help in these areas, and short of taking him to a therapist, I’m at a loss of what other things I can try.
